Many visitors to Poland probably do not associate Polish cuisine with vegan and vegetarian cooking. It is true that traditional Polish food often involves copious use of meat. Yet, some popular Polish recipes can easily be made vegetarian and vegan friendly. These Polish dishes are meat-free and are often packed with wonderful health benefits, such as proteins, vitamins, fiber, iron and more.
Traditional Polish Soups for Vegans and Vegetarians
While a large number of Polish soup recipes call for meat, some of them consider meat an optional ingredient. Basic Polish borscht, for example, is an extremely healthy, quick and easy to make winter soup that can be made with or without meat. For the traditional Polish Christmas Eve dinner, borscht is always cooked without any animal-products. Want to make vegetarian and vegan friendly borscht at home? Simply swap chicken based soup stock for vegetable soup stock, and skip boiled eggs in the serving part.
Simple Meat-Free Polish Vegetable Salads
The Polish kitchen has many vegetarian-friendly salad recipes, such as pineapple and cheese salad with mayonnaise dressing, grated fresh apple and carrot salad, or sauerkraut and cabbage based salads. For vegans, there are a diverse variety of simple and healthful Polish beetroot salads. Beets and onion in vinegar dressing, and boiled beets with grated horseradish root are among some of the most typical Polish salads.
Polish Vegetarian and Vegan Main Courses
Aside from borscht, pierogie is probably the second most well-known Polish food outside of Poland. Widely known as Polish dumplings, pierogies can be made in many different ways. At Christmas time, stir-fried mushroom and onion pierogies are one of the most favored kinds since they do not require meat. Pierogies are delicious yet healthy winter treat, for meat-eaters and non-meat eaters alike.
Another traditional Polish main course that can be prepared with or without meat is baked stuffed cabbage leaves, known as golabki. Popular fillings for golabki include cooked buckwheat, a great source for iron, grated potatoes and cooked white rice.
Polish Cuisine’s Flexibility
Vegan and vegetarian visitors to Poland should rest assured about their food choices. On the surface, it can sometimes seem near impossible to find Polish recipes that do not involve meat. However, Polish cuisine boasts wonderful flexibility and creativity. Besides traditionally vegan and vegetarian dishes, as some of those mentioned above, a recipe can often be adapted to leave out animal products. With the growing global trend of veganism and vegetarianism, one has reasons to think that Polish cuisine will continually to evolve to become more vegan and vegetarian friendly in the future.
