Looking for a fun, unique and free activity in Lyon? Head to the l'Amphi at National Opéra de Lyon to enjoy a free noon concert of modern jazz, classical piano, and more.

With the exception of July and August, established musicians come from all over the world throughout the year to play at l’Amphi, the treasured café situated inside the National Opera House of Lyon, known locally as l’Opéra de Lyon. Their concerts usually take place at night in the intimate and chic ambience of l’Amphi. There is, however, a chance to see these talented artists perform live for free. Here is how:

Free Noon Concerts at l'Amphi of Lyon's Opera House

L’Amphi runs a popular program called AmphiMidi, or Amphi Noon. Basically, scheduled artists give free performances around noon, often in the same place where their actual concerts will happen later in the day or week. The idea is to make music available to a larger audience; for example, to those who cannot afford to pay for the night concerts. Performing for free also benefits the artists. Sometimes the audience end up liking what they hear at AmphiMidi so much that they will purchase tickets for the night concerts.

How to Get into l’Amphi’s Free Performances

No reservation is necessary. These midday performances operate on a first-come first-serve basis. Concerts and shows usually begin at half past noon, but it is highly advisable to come half an hour or more in advance. Lyon’s local inhabitants love taking advantages of these free and quality culture events. So come and line up early to get a good seat. L’Amphi itself has enough space for approximately seventy to one hundred spectators, depending on the seats arrangement. An energetic team of l’Amphi’s staff is available so don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.

Past and Future Performances at l'Amphi

L’Amphi opens its stage to a wonderfully diverse range of music, from modern jazz to classical singing to experimental music-theater pieces. Past performers have hailed from Korea, India, Brazil and also from nearer to home. Budding music talents from the competitive National Conservatory of Lyon play at l’Amphi annually. The atmosphere is refreshingly relaxed and unpretentious. Members of the audience often get invited to participate in the performances.
